B.Music St ( Music Technology ) [Adelaide]

(b1980, New Delhi - India )

Vinny Bhagat is the founding member and director for ” Shivnakuan Productions”. His work explores computational electro acoustic music using digital sound generative methods , physical models, real time audio synthesis models, audio-visual feedback processes and image to sound conversions . His interest lies in exploring new models for sound creation . He combines custom build applications and found objects for the creation of a new musical expression. His current research is in the area of ‘Automated Percussion’ (computer controlled objects with variable time patterns producing mechanics that excites resonant bodies.Ideas like motion tracking to sound variables, pyhsical energy to data conversion, mechanical objects for performance forms part of his research ). He is deeply interested in spontaneous music performances , distributed online performances and improvisation with computers and percussion in performance situations.

He is a graduate in  Music Technology from The Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide. After graduating he studied Percussion under Mr. Jim Bailey. , examining techniques of human playing to machine replacement . During his studies at the conservatorium , he studied Music theory ,composition and music technology under Mr. Stephen Whittington and Mr.Christian Haines. In India he studied ‘Percussion’ under Ustad Akram Khan ( of Ajrara Gharana ) at Shriram Bhartiya Kala kendra, New Delhi and music in childhood under Mr. Bhaskar Bose.

During the years of his study and stay in Adelaide he has been actively involved in performances highlighting improvised/spontaneous- experimental computer music. His performance is like a journey, which can start with ambient minimal found sounds and climbs to various areas of sonic art that often puts the listener into a reflective spatial environment. The spontaneous nature of the music means you hear a one off performance. Most of his performances are complimented with Visual installations , be it live video ,projecting digital color or painting the canvas. During the year 2008 he conducted several distributed online performances with live performers in Italy/france , India  and Australlia.

Vinny is also a member of Aether9 - an experiment in collaborative realtime storytelling.Developed by an online networked group of international visual artists/collectives working through Oceania, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and into the Americas, Æther9 is a matrix for video/audio performance, and collaborative hybrids of post-dramatic processes particular to current modes of digital communication. The system functions as an open platform for participants of any technical level to transmit imagery in real-time and interact through a structured narrative performance questioning the issues of presence/absence, remote/local, identity and intimacy in the context of the electronic space.

Vinny also plays drums & percussion for Adelaide based original music group “Seeing Orbo” - ( acoustic fusion ,songs that share human experiences of existence ,  a group i.e quite popular for song based compositions and live performances, is currently working on their second EP.Other projects include playing percussion / guest apperances for Ezulai ,Bigbodo Band ,drumkit for Adelaide City Concert Band, tie ups with Adelaide Experimental Arts Society ,Creative Original Music Adelaide ,Tyndall Assembly, Shantarastra School of Yoga & Help Man Academy Workshop schemes. Past performances include Carnival Of Electronic Creativity 2009 , COMA ( 2005,2006,2007,2008,2009 ), Tyndall Assembly (2006,2007 ), Ear Poke @ Australian Computer Music conference (2006 ) amongst many others. He is the former percussionist for Delhi based Original music group/concept “Envision”.

[MEDIA RELEASES]

* The final performance of the final evening of CeC 2009, we were back to unpresented live improvisation to close the whole show. Vinny laid down the central core of the performance, with an eloquent compendium of pure audio-synthesis, made and played in SuperCollider. Things got almost hypnotic, and, in very many ways, it was altogether an amazingly appropriate act to end with. – ( Shankar Barua , Academy of Electronic Arts )

* Vinny Bhagat is a percussionist and electronic musician specialising in improvisation and the connection between sound and moving image in a live performance context. Since 2005, Vinny has performed under the title Shivna Kaun and has performed around Adelaide and Australia. He also has a strong interest in network performance, and has performed numerous concerts with participants both on local networks and via the internet in Italy and India. ( Dorkbot Adelaide Oct 2008 ).

* Vinny Bhagat’s work is based on performance of isolated performers ( different countries / location ), conducting distributed performances ,connecting musicians , visual artists - sonically and visually - hence streaming audio and video from multiple locations to the performance venue & vice versa. He is examining available technologies for audio video streaming , audio video conferences & tools for isolated musicians & Vj’s. – ( Robert Hart,  Air Stream wireless , Oct 2008 )

* ” Some cool ambient/ avant garde sounds with Vinny Bhagat’s computer program. He evoked the early electronic music worlds of Stockhausen, perhaps a digital “Cesar der Junglinge”. Shivnakaun slowly built up layer on layer reminiscent of an Indian Raga or Robert Ashley’s ‘Wolfman’. A stimulating world to experience”. – David Harris ( Radio Adelaide - Live Music Festival 2008 )

* There was potential aplenty in the solo virtuosity of Vinny Bhagat’s computer work “.

– Rodney Smith - The Advertiser , 1 August 2007

* ” Vinny Bhagat’s work weaves together traditional Indian music influences with electronics creating ethereal soundscapes swelling with percussion and drones. He is a founding member of the local improvisation group“Shivna Kaun” and currently practices as a solo artist ”
